Gilbert Agricultural & Rural Development Center

Date : 2011-04-05 10:39:54 The Gilbert Agricultural & Rural Development Center (GARD Center) came into existence as a grass-root, non-government, church- based organization during the late 1980s. A strategic partnership amongst the Canadian Government, the Government of Antigua and Barbuda and the Methodist Church in the Caribbean and the Americas paved the way for the creation of an unique pace setting institution that has survived the dramatic withdrawal of a number of international donors from the Region; the decline of volunteerism (which is the foundation of most NGOs); and the lack of recognition of the value and contributions of NGOs. The GARD Center has over 18 years experience in training youth and women in enterprise development in agricultural and rural based businesses and is registered as a non-profit company. The Center offers a wide range of courses and programs to meet the needs of its main target groups youth between the ages of 16 - 30 years and women with special emphasis on the unemployed and seasonally employed. One of the emphases of the training has been in the area of the use of local and natural resources for rural based, cottage industries, which includes soap-crafting, herb and spice production, handicraft, solar drying and beekeeping. The GARD Center provides a number of services for its graduates: Small Business Advisory Service,Question and Answer Service, Technical Assistance, Internet Access, Revolving Loan Fund for women.
