DescriptionThe Jesuit Refugee Service (JRS) is an international Catholic organisation with a mission to accompany, serve and defend the rights of refugees and forcibly displaced people. JRS undertakes services at national and regional levels with the support of an international office in Rome. Founded in November 1980 as a work of the Society of Jesus, JRS was officially registered on 19 March 2000 at the Vatican State as a foundation. The Mikono Craft shop was established in 1993 as a project within the IGP. It aims at empowering the refugees financially by providing a market outlet for the handicrafts that they produce. The shop buys crafts from refugees living in Nairobi and the refugee camps in Kenya. Mikono" is the Swahili word for hands. As a business entity, the shop buys the crafts and sells them to both domestic and export markets, providing an outlet for approximately 70 refugees families, 75% of them being women. The profit made from the sale of the crafts is used for stock purchase and to cover some operating costs of the shop.
