DescriptionCambodian Volunteers for Community Development (CVCD) addresses the needs of communities in the urban slums of Phnom Penh by providing a wide-range of skills training to achieve self-empowerment and by encouraging active community volunteerism. Created in 1992 by a group of Khmer students, CVCD has now been recognized by both the Cambodian King and the international community for the impact its work has had on the communities it serves. CVCD offers informal primary level education to children who are unable to attend formal schools either because of high government fees or the need to work to support their families. For those disabled by landmines left behind after the war, CVCD created a vocational school to train students in sewing, electronics, and mechanics. Students receive healthcare, basic health training, literacy and business education, as well as a small grant to start their own business when they graduate. In addition, CVCD supports several sewing cooperatives, a child sponsorship program, a rice-cultivating initiative, and environmental projects such as the Positive Paper Project, which entails HIV positive adults making handicrafts out of recycled paper for sale locally and abroad. Like many start-up non-governmental organizations (NGOs), CVCD has faced financial difficulties. In 1998, the reduction in foreign aid to Cambodia, which forced many local and international NGOs to close, threatened CVCD's continuation. With only a couple hundred dollars in funds, CVCD sustained itself through the above mentioned programs that not only generate revenue for participants but also much needed funds for the organization's operations and programs. Today CVCD is able to reach numerous communities and continues to expand its projects. By providing skills training and education in exchange for community participation, CVCD is actively achieving its goal of reducing poverty, empowering the disadvantaged, and spreading the spirit of volunteerism in Cambodia.
