ART TALK: African Contemporary Photography

Date : 09/22/2011 - 01/01/2011

Street Address118 Robert Mugabe Avenue

DescriptionOn the occasion of the Month of Photography, freelance photographer and artist Christine Skowski presents a lecture on African Contemporary Photography. Photography has maintained a vital presence in African culture for over a century. But the recognition of African photographers and their unique visual language has come about only recently. When Western photography engages Africa, it often evokes pathological images of disease, corruption, and poverty. The global media almost never depict contemporary Africans in ordinary situations. "While studying photography in Germany, I became passionate about African Photography, and the subject of how Africans represent themselves”, says Skowski. “Discovering the old West African photographic legends like Seydou Keita and Malick Sidibé was absolute magic."
