Design + Craft + Artisan Communities = sustainable development of cultural identities – experience in Colombia

Date : 2010-11-19 10:45:42

DescriptionDesign practitioners should play a key role in the sustainability of knowledge and cultural identity, a role on which Artisan communities and the Craft sector depends. This matter –which goes beyond an expected profitability (within the ‘accepted’ market economy)– deserves to be enriched with all diverse perspectives of professionals, thinking and acting globally (means), in order to re-think and re-act locally (ends). This is particularly correct regarding the fields of Design and Craft education and professional practice. In the interplay between design – craft – artisan/community, in the confrontation of the inherent ‘values’ and ‘expertises’ of each, it is only through equitable knowledge-building that may genuine [cultural] identities reveal, in a legitimate sustainable dynamic. I aim to suggest alternatives about ways of –systematically– putting our competences and capabilities to serve (a) more fair and interesting social ‘development’, for all.
