Looking over craft design: Memory as an instrument of building new aesthetics

Date : 2010-11-19 10:43:43

DescriptionThe globalisation phenomenon has struck even the most remote populations. In Brazil, a community of artisans witnessed profound transformations occur in their lives since electric energy first arrived in 1982, affecting them subjectively in many levels, influencing the constitution of their cultural identity and memory. Nevertheless, concerning the industrialisation of culture, how are cultural manifestations renewed? As Memory is understood not only as a record referring to the past but also as an instrument of building new forms of future existence, the aim of this paper is to discuss the importance of Memory in processes of creation and design adopted by the community of Bichinho facing the impact of new technologies and global market logics. Although having a long tradition producing hand-made crafts these artisans seem to have found a creative way to continue producing their goods, recreating their immaterial patrimony and participating in the global market successfully.
